THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
THE DETAIL
Everything that shortens a handheld’s life happens at the bottom edge. The dock contact takes the strain every time it goes in and out, the port beside it collects pocket lint, and the charging habit you have — topping up constantly, or running flat and filling to a hundred — is quietly deciding how many years the battery has.

FROM THE CURATOR
The instinct to put it back in the dock every time you stand up is the thing wearing the battery out. Cells age fastest sitting at a full charge and warm, which is exactly what a dock does. Play it down to a third, charge it to about eighty, take it out. It is a small change and it is worth a genuinely surprising number of extra months.
