A sleeve fails while you are holding it. A binder fails on a shelf, quietly, over months, while it is supposedly looking after the best cards you own. Nearly all of that damage traces back to four things you decide once, in the shop, before a single card goes in.
▸ THE QUICK VERSION
The ring first. A round O-ring reaches furthest into the page halfway up the stack, and that arc is what leaves crescent dents. A D-ring's front wall sits in the same place for every sheet.
Then the pockets. Side-loading, if the binder will ever be picked up, carried, or handed across a table.
Then the plastic. Polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene. Never PVC.
Then the fill. Buy a size up: a binder is safe at two-thirds full and dangerous at completely full.
What actually does the damage
RING, POCKETS, PLASTIC, FILL — IN THAT ORDER
An open binder is harmless. Every failure here happens in the second after you shut the cover: a shut binder is not a container but a clamp, and the covers are its jaws. Whatever is thickest inside takes the pressure, and that is always the cards.
That one fact reorders the decision. Not the cover art, not the card count printed on the box: what matters is the shape of the metal at the spine, which way the pockets open, what the plastic will be doing to the card in five years, and how much you have asked the covers to close over. Take them in that order — the first cannot be fixed later without moving every card you own.
▸ THE SAME BINDER, TWICE, IN SECTION
The ring's shape decides where the shut cover lands — on one column of cards, or across all three.
Start at the mechanism
O-RING, D-RING, OR NO RING AT ALL
Look at the binder from the end, closed, before anything else. Circles, put it back. Ds with the straight edge against the spine are candidates. The flat back is not a styling choice: it lets the sheets stack squarely instead of curving, and it buys capacity — a D-ring carries more sheets than a round ring of the same nominal size, because a circle wastes the room above and below its own equator.
The third option is no ring at all. Bound binders — sewn or glued along a spine, often with a zip round the outside — have no mechanism to press anything and nothing to work loose. What you give up is reordering: pages cannot be added or moved, so the binder is finished from the day you fill it. A real cost for a set you are still completing; for a run you have already sorted, the calmest thing on the shelf.
Then check which way the pockets open. A top-loading pocket relies on gravity and friction, fine until the binder is tipped, carried or handed across a table. A side-loading page — the packet will say side-load — takes the card in from the edge, so once the page is in the rings the opening faces the spine and nothing can fall out, whichever way up it goes.
The punched margin is the thinnest, weakest strip of the whole page, and when the binder stands upright it is also the strip carrying every gram of the sheet and its eighteen cards.
Then read the plastic
THREE NAMES TO LOOK FOR, ONE TO REFUSE
Packaging says archival safe and acid-free, and neither phrase has a fixed definition anybody is obliged to meet. The plastic's name does. The Library of Congress's own storage guidance names polyester, polypropylene and polyethylene as the plastics to use, and tells you to avoid polyvinyl chloride and anything unlabelled.
Surfaces, too: a page that looks slightly cloudy has been coated or heavily plasticised, and neither is what you want lying on artwork for a decade. Clear, and dry to the touch, or leave it on the shelf.
Size it for two-thirds
THE ARITHMETIC NOBODY DOES IN THE SHOP
Binders are advertised by card count, which sounds like capacity and is really a count of pockets. Do the other sum instead; it takes fifteen seconds.
A standard card is twelve points thick — twelve thousandths of an inch, about three tenths of a millimetre. A nine-pocket page filled on both sides holds eighteen cards, so at any single pocket position the sheet contributes two cards of thickness. Stack thirty of those sheets and every pocket position in the binder is sixty cards deep.

A binder rated for six hundred cards is telling you how many pockets it has. It is not telling you whether the covers will still close.

Sight down the rings
Closed, from the end. Circles are out. Straight-backed Ds, or no rings at all, stay in the running.
Open a page and find the mouth
An opening along the top edge means the cards are held in by gravity. An opening on the edge that will face the spine means they are held in by the binder itself.
Read the plastic on the packet
Polyester, polypropylene or polyethylene, printed as a word. If the only claim is a slogan, treat the plastic as unknown and put it down.
Count your sheets, then take the next size up
Work out how many pages you need filled, add half again, buy for that. Cheaper than the second binder you would otherwise buy within the year.
Shut it and look at the fore-edge
The covers should sit parallel. If they splay into a wedge, the block is already thicker than the mechanism, and the pressure is landing on cards.
If you already own the wrong one
TWO FIXES, BOTH FREE, BOTH TONIGHT
Nobody needs to rehouse a collection tonight. Do the two free things first. Take pages out until the covers meet flat — whatever comes out can sit in a box for a fortnight and come to no harm. Then stand the binder upright, like a book, so the pages hang from the rings instead of the whole stack bearing down on the sheet at the bottom.
After that, empty the round-ring binder in the order that matters: the spine-side column first, because that is the column the arc has been leaning on all along. The rest can wait for the next binder you buy — a D-ring, two-thirds full, made of a plastic you can name out loud.
