CHASE CARDS

sets, pulls & grails.

Which sets are worth opening, which cards are worth chasing, and how not to get faked on the way to the grail.

▸ THE LADDER, BOTTOM TO TOP

The symbol in the bottom corner is the whole market compressed into one character.

A dot, a diamond, a star. That mark is not decoration — it is a rate. It tells you roughly how many of that card walk out of a sealed box, and therefore what somebody will pay to skip the box entirely. Everything above the star stops being a new symbol and starts being a new treatment: more foil, more art, less of it. Learn the ladder once and a binder page stops being pretty cardboard and starts reading like a price list.

PACKS IN A BOX

Every rate you will ever read is quoted against this number. If a shop quotes odds per pack, multiply by thirty-six before you get excited.

≈1

CARD ANYONE WANTS

A box averages about one top-tier hit. Not one per pack, not one per row of your binder. One — and sometimes none.

0

GUARANTEES

Boxes do not remember the last one. Six blanks in a row does not make the seventh owe you anything.

Three moves, in order.

STEP 02 · VERIFY

Spot a Fake in Ten Seconds.

Real foil moves. Fake foil sparkles and sits still. One tilt under a decent lamp separates the two faster than any price guide ever will — and it costs nothing to learn.

▸ FROM THE ARCHIVIST · IAN

"A sealed box isn't a gamble, it's an average with a bad temper. Thirty-six packs hand you about one card anybody wants, and the market priced that in years ago. Open boxes because you like opening boxes. Buy singles because you want the card."

▸ THE GRAIL, IN PERSPECTIVE

A grail is only a grail until it's yours. Chase the card you'd still want if it were worthless.

Prices go up, prices come down, and the reprint you didn't see coming lands in March. The only card that never depreciates is the one you'd have kept anyway.
