HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
Over-ear headphones resting on a desk stand, earpads compressed slightly, violet light along the headband.

SLOT 06 · AUDIO · THE CANS

A headset is two compromises taped together.

A mediocre headphone with a mediocre microphone attached. The same money, split, buys two good things.

The cup, open and closed.

THE DETAIL

Cut an earcup in half and the entire open-versus-closed argument becomes obvious. An open back lets the driver breathe into the room, which makes space and depth easy to hear and makes everyone near you a participant. A closed back traps it, which keeps your evening private and makes the same soundstage harder work.

A desk at night: headphones on a stand, a coiled cable, a small amplifier with one knob.

FROM THE CURATOR

Replace the pads before the headphones

Earpads are a wear part and almost nobody treats them as one. After two years the foam has compressed, the seal has gone, and the bass you are missing is leaking out around your jaw. A fifteen-pound set of pads restores more than most upgrades do, and people replace the whole headphone instead because nothing ever told them the pads come off.
