THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
THE DETAIL
Almost every improvement available to you is in this gap. Halving the distance roughly doubles how much of you the microphone hears relative to the room, which is why a cheap mic close up beats an expensive one across the desk. The pop filter is not about noise — it is about the burst of air a hard consonant throws.

FROM THE CURATOR
People buy a four-hundred-pound microphone to fix a sound problem that is actually a bare wall two feet behind them. A duvet on a stand, a bookcase with books in it, a rug — these change a recording more than any upgrade at that price. Fix the room first. Then, if you still want the microphone, at least you will be able to hear what it is doing.
