HowTo Network emblem How To: Gaming THE HOW TO CO. — EDITION 10
A dark wood desk surface at a low grazing angle, a monitor arm clamped at the rear edge.

SLOT 07 · DESKS & CHAIRS · THE SURFACE

Depth matters more than width.

Almost every desk sold for gaming gets the depth wrong, and depth is the number that decides where the screen can sit.

The surface, and the two numbers under it.

THE DETAIL

A desk is defined by two measurements and neither is the one on the product page. Height decides whether your elbows land at ninety without your shoulders lifting. Depth decides whether a monitor can sit far enough back to be comfortable, which on a shallow desk it simply cannot, no matter what arm you buy.

SLOT 07 · DESKS & CHAIRS · THE SURFACE
A desk at night: a cable tray under the surface, a loom running into it, a power strip.

FROM THE CURATOR

Measure before you buy the arm

Two numbers, thirty seconds: how thick is the rear edge of your desk, and how much clear space is there behind whatever is on it. Half the monitor arms sent back are sent back because the desk edge is forty millimetres thick and the clamp opens to thirty-five, or because there is a wall six centimetres behind and the arm needs twelve. Neither is on the product page in a way anybody reads.
