An invented modular brick city block on a lit shelf, low warm light raking across the studs.

SHELF 05 / 07 · LEGO

Every brick made since 1958 still fits.

Shelf 05 is the one where the plastic has a spec sheet. What to buy, how to build it, and which boxes quietly stopped being toys.

The brick, taken apart and measured.

DRAWN IN THE GALLERY

Three numbers hold the whole system together: eight millimetres between studs, 9.6 to the top of a brick, 3.2 to the top of a plate. Nothing else is doing the work. The grip is an interference fit — each stud is pinched on the diagonal between two hollow tubes — which is why a brick pressed home in 1958 still comes apart under a fingernail today. Drawn here exploded, the upper piece inverted so the tubes are visible.

Nothing is built at the table first.

SHELF 05 · THE BENCH

Two shots from the working half of the shelf — where the pieces live before they are a model, and where a set is actually won or lost.

Bricks sorted by colour into shallow drawers, one drawer pulled open under warm shelf light.

THE DRAWERS

Colour is the second sort. Shape is the first, and the drawer holding every 1×2 in the house is the one that gives you your evening back.

A half-built invented brick set beside its open instruction book and a sorted parts tray.

THE BENCH

Book open, tray filled, bags in order. Most of a set is built in the twenty minutes before the first brick goes on.

Three cases stand on this shelf.

SHELF 05 · CASES 01—03

A shelf this deep needs three doors: what to buy, how to build it, and what the box is worth once the theme is discontinued. Each placard opens onto its own case.

Extreme macro across a field of studs, one transparent brick catching the light.

Dust finds the studs first. It always tells on you.

A sealed invented brick set box standing beside the completed built model.

FROM THE CURATOR

The best set I own is the one I built twice.

I kept it sealed for two years because the internet told me to, and a sealed box on a shelf is still just a box. So I opened it on a wet Sunday, built it, took it apart, and built it again from the book with the telly on. It is worth less now. I like it more. Sealed is a position; built is a collection, and only one of those is the reason you started buying bricks.

5 PIECES · IN THE ARCHIVE

Nobody glues a set. That is the joke, and it is also the ledger — five pieces this shelf is holding room for, listed here until they are written.

01

How to read a set’s price per part before you buy it

Divide, then judge. The one number that says whether a licence is charging rent.

02

How to sort five thousand pieces without losing the evening

By shape first, colour second. The order that turns a big box into a build, not a hunt.

BY IRIS · 5 MIN

03

How to tell a set is about to retire

Stock gaps, discount patterns, and the quiet signs a theme is being wound down.

BY POPPY · 8 MIN

04

How to build a modular that does not sag in the middle

Where to hide a plate, when to overlap a course, and why long walls fail first.

BY IRIS · 7 MIN

05

How to store a sealed box so it is still sealed in ten years

Flat, dark, dry and off the floor. Shrink-wrap is not a preservation plan.
